Hours of fun & very durable September 5, 2010 Reeniedoh Bought this for my 4 year olds birthday & he loves it. It is very durable & child proof. The only problem with it is it uses standard batteries. Wouldve been perfect if you could charge them!
VTech kids digital camera August 18, 2010 Brian Walker (Wakefield,UK) This is a great product to teach your kids about digital photography. Although easy to use, it introduces kids to the art of real digital photography. It is so tough, too. My grandson dropped this from the top of the stairs to the bottom, I felt sure this would be the end of it. But when I picked it up there wasn't even a scratch on it. Show me any normal digital camera that would survive that. Brilliant. Recommend it 100%.
Ok camera, shame about the video games August 17, 2010 P. M. Mccurdy (UK) The camera is ok. The picture quality isnt that great and while I appreciate it is a kid's camera, it is poor in low to medium light and even a 4 year old can recognize that. I appreciate the idea behind adding the video games but this was purchased as a camera, not a video game console with the idea to encourage photography and not video game play. For that alone, I would encourage people to buy a different product.
It's great August 16, 2010 Becky My four year old loves this camera, we now have pictures of the whole house and every family member - she likes the games too. Well worth the money.
Good concept, flawed execution July 15, 2010 Flaus Marti (Cuernavaca, Mor) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Ordered this camera for my 4 year old son, and although it has its strong points, it has too many weaknesses to justify the hefty price tag.
Good points:
1) Seems very strong and durable
2) Simple controls
3) Battery life is quite good, with NiMH rechargables will last a good few days of heavy use
Bad points:
1) Picture quality is terrible, most pictures have a green-blue colour cast that is very noticable. Also the "film speed" is way too low, practically all photos are blurred, it's hard for young children to hold a camera rock-steady while they take a picture, so the camera should've have been programmed with this in mind with a high film speed (and fast shutter speed) to reduce this problem. As it is, if my son takes one usable picture in 100 it's a miracle. I wasn't expecting the camera to produce wonderful pics every time, my son's no Man Ray for sure, but he quickly lost interest when nothing turned out properly.
2) It would be great to see the (few) half decent pictures on our big screen. There is a cable included to connect the camera to a TV via the video-in port. But theres no picture on our TV, just snow. We live in Mexico (we brought the camera back after a trip to the UK) and maybe there's a compatibility problem, supposedly there's a setting to enable the pictures to be seen on on either european or US televisions, but switching to the US setting makes no difference (we bought the TV in the US so it's not that Mexican tvs have some weird idiosyncrasy). We're quite tecno literate here, we went through all the possible settings on the camera and the TV but nothing worked. So if you wish to buy this camera and use it ouside the UK or europe beware.
3) Despite being generally robust, the one weak point is the LCD screen. It got scratched within the first few hours and really should come with a replaceable plastic protector or some other method to protect it.
4)It comes loaded with games. If you want your kids to play computer games, then you won't have a problem. If you don't want your kids to play computer games, and would prefer them to use the camera to take pictures, then be prepared for them to spend all day playing the games instead. Although for many the games will be a nice touch, for many it's not, and VTECH should at least have included a parental override function to block the games function if, like us, you are keen that your kids use the camera as a camera.
Points 2, 3 and 4 aren't gamebreakers for us, but point 1 is the huge disappointment. With a picture quality this bad, it's practically worthless as a camera.
