Full HD the way to go March 1, 2010 Geoffrey Mitchell (Dublin, Ireland) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
An excellent product, light and easy to use. the 1000 digital zoom is a very shaky and broken at full stretch but on a maximum of 40X it's a sharp clear image with exceptional definition. Hence HD, all together a good buy
Let down by noisy image. Not HD in my opinion. February 15, 2010 Davinder 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I purchased this unit after reading many positive reviews on Amazon and other websites.
I fully agree that this is a lovely size and weight for a camcorder but I am really disappointed with the picture quality from this device.
The image when connected to a HDTV using the optional HDMI cable is really quite poor. The noise on the image is obvious even in good light and the resolution of the image is so poor that it is impossible to read text on objects that you are filming that are perfectly clear using an SD camcorder.
The supplied battery life is about an hour and a half but I never managed to achieve that in reality.
Another bugbear is the battery charger. It is very difficult to remove the battery from the charger if you have normal fingers as the release clip is awkward to get to.
Sometimes I wonder what other people see in an item when they review it. I am incredibly disappointed with this purchase.
Panasonic HDC-SD10 (4 out of 5 stars) February 12, 2010 G. Ince (Romford) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this camera and found it to be exactly as I expected with the bonus that it imported video to iMovie '08 without issue on my MacBook via USB2. On the box it says that you require iMovie '09, but as I have found '08 also works. The zoom is very smooth, and produces good results even when the 16x Optical zoom is combined with the Digital zoom to give a combined 40x zoom (although it does go up to 1000x which I've not tried yet).
Camera is very compact, light and charges in around 1.5 hours. Touch screen is generally very responsive, and easy to navigate.
There are only 2 minor downsides that I have noticed so far: 1) some visible noise (i.e. pixelation) when used in low light conditions, but the camera light goes some way to resolve this, 2) small moveable plastic flap has to be moved every time a component or USB cable is plugged in.
Hopelessly Drenched Colours SD10 February 11, 2010 Ptrek (LONDON, UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The first thing I noticed upon opening the box was that the lens cover was open. My rising anger was soon tempered though when I started playing around with shooting video and saw the results! It is a simpletons camera: all the main buttons are intuitively in the right place, though the zoom lever is a bit uncontrollable and hard to get used to. It feels very light, plasticky and cheap. It is made of cheap plastic panels screwed together. Okay, I'll get straight to the point. In ideal conditions, the results can be stunning. But, and it is a very big but where I'm concerned, in anything less than daylight the results are disastrous. I kid you not. Colours smear in the most ghastly fashion, and all those HD pixels look like the results from a pocket Kodak Brownie that has been through a river. I still own an 18 year old Sony 8mm analogue video camera that can shoot better video in low light. I think it is obviously something to do with the size of the CCDs.
I like shooting live band videos and try as I might, I cannot get good results with this Panasonic. Perhaps for holiday videos in bright sunlight it is perfect, but for anything other than daylight, forget it.
I have had the Panasonic 2 months, but already I am looking for another camera. I will take a retro step I think and get something like an 8 year old Sony or Canon MDV with 3 CCDs that can handle low light situations well.
You live and learn. Of course this is just my opinion, please make your own mind up.
Top quality for price February 4, 2010 K. Jamal (UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I won't repeat technical specification for this as it is easily available and described better than I could. This is small and light and fits in the palm of the hand. This is good but if you have large hands you will need to get used to handling this accurately. The zoom lever needs a bit of finger contortions to operate but something I am sure I will get used to in time. I like the battery compartment under the flip screen and not hanging at the back as with most camcorders. Yet strangely, there is something uncouth about the shape of the whole thing. It is probably the rectangular shape which stops it being visibly aesthetic with smooth flows of shape. Still, this is personal preference and could mean nothing to another person.
The touchscreen is very responsive, the menu system is intuitive and simple and most important of all the pictures are clear with vibrant colours.
To connect properlly to a HD TV, needs an HDMI cable. It would have been a nice and kind gesture by Panasonic to include one but they don't.
Great camcorder. Design okay.
